Learning & Growing with CJ Elliot

Simple ideas for reading, playing and enjoying everyday moments with children aged 2–5. Drawing on 30 years of experience as an early childhood educator working with young children around the world, CJ Elliot shares ideas for time together.

Reading Together

A favourite book, a familiar voice and a little time together. Story time can be simple, relaxed and led by your child's curiosity.

Follow Their Curiosity

Pause to look at the pictures and notice what catches your child's attention. You might ask, 'What can you see?' or 'What do you think Coco will do next?' Leave room for pointing, chatting or simply listening.

Enjoy Favourite Stories Again

If your child asks for the same book, enjoy another visit to a familiar story. Let them join in with a favourite word, sound or moment. There is no need to finish every page.

Try it with Coco: choose a picture together and take turns noticing one little detail.

Learning Through Play

Little adventures can begin with things you already have at home. Try these playful ideas together and let your child add their own.

Go on a Colour Hunt

Choose a colour from a book illustration, then look around the room for something that matches. Take turns choosing the next colour and see what you discover together.

Tell a Toy's Story

Choose a favourite soft toy and imagine a little adventure. Where will it go? Who will it meet? Let your child guide the story through words, movements or pretend play.

Everyday Parenting

Every family has its own rhythm. These gentle ideas are invitations to connect, with room to adapt them to your child and your day.

Talk About Little Feelings

A story can offer a starting point for a conversation. Wonder together whether a character feels curious, excited or unsure. Invite your child to share, without expecting a particular answer.

Make Time for Familiar Moments

A story after lunch, a chat while getting ready or a cuddle before bed can become a moment you enjoy together. Choose something that fits your family, and keep it simple.
